This talk is based on a two-centre holiday, the first week
spent in St. Johann im Tyrol, and the second week in Schladming.
|
The first few days were rather wet, but didn't prevent us from
exploring the Kitzbuhlerhorn, where the lush, flowery meadows of the lower
slopes gradually merged with higher slopes covered in eye-catching alpines.
The recently constructed Alpine Garden here provided a fascinating and
educational diversion.
To the north of St Johann were the jagged limestone peaks of the
Wilder Kaiser range, harbouring another intriguing range of plants. Other
trips took us to Kufstein, with its enormously powerful outdoor pipe organ,
and to the three magnificent cascades of the Krimml waterfalls.
Better weather accompanied our move to Schladming, an ideal centre
for many mountain trips into both acid and alkaline environments. The nearby
slopes of Planai, the mountains above the pass at Obertauern, and the cable
car up to the glaciers of the Dachstein Group, all provided plenty of camera
fodder.

But the most spectacular trip of all was over the Grossglocknerstrasse,
the source of all the illustrations on this page. With spectacular views
and wonderful plants, this destination is hard to equal.
